Bärely Moving, Deeply Grooving | Blues and Slow Balboa Workshop

Who says we need a lot of movement for a lot of fun?

This workshop explores two styles that, while coming from different traditions, meet beautifully in their emphasis on listening, subtlety, and human connection: Blues & Slow Bal

Blues and Slow Bal both invite dancers to move with intention rather than speed. Instead of flashy patterns, they focus on weight shifts, timing, and the feeling of the music. In both dances, the partnership is central: you’re not just executing steps, you’re responding to each other moment by moment. This creates a unique sense of intimacy and creativity, where even the simplest movements can feel rich and expressive.

Tracks & levels:

Blues (Intermediate+)
  • Venetia and Marcin will start with a dive into Ballroomin’ Blues, focusing on maintaining a smooth, flowy movement while traveling along the line of dance and exploring improvisation and communication within the partnership. From there, the class will focus on levelling up the Close Embrace through a more engaged quality of connection—one that allows for deep connection with your partner while still maintaining autonomy and individuality in the dance.
  • Being able to comfortably dance with a solid chest-to-chest connection will be essential for this track. Ideal for dancers with prior Blues experience or more experienced Pure Bal dancers looking to discover something new.

Slow Balboa (Intermediate+)
  • Jen and Andrew will guide students through the Dean/Laminu basics, exploring how long pauses and slide steps can build patience and anticipation within the movement. From there, the classes open up into rhythm and step variations, giving dancers the tools to make the dance their own.
  • No prior experience with Slow Balboa required but participants should have solid Balboa foundations. Ideal for participants at BB level 3 and above.

Meet your Blues instructors

Venetia Bazioti

Venetia discovered Blues in 2016 and fully immersed herself in it from 2023 onward. Based in Munich, she has played a key role in building a warm and connected local Blues scene. She teaches, DJs, and travels across Europe to dance and share her passion. Deeply inspired by Blues music, she explores its roots and expression, bringing that curiosity into both her teaching and DJing. Her focus is on connection, musicality, and creating spaces where dancers can feel at home and express themselves.

Marcin Stankiewicz

Marcin is a trainer, DJ, and organizer with Boogie Bären, inspired by the wide range of Blues music—from mellow to funky. He approaches each dance as a new story, embracing creativity and surprise. In his classes, he creates a supportive environment where students can explore their own expression and connection to the music. He emphasizes strong fundamentals while encouraging playfulness and curiosity as key tools for learning and growth.

Meet your Slow Bal instructors

Jen Barnett

Known for bringing a touch of math and science into the ballroom (don’t worry—just a little), Jen started dancing with tap as a child before returning to partner dancing after studying chemistry. She has spent over two decades in swing, teaching and competing internationally, with placements at events like CalBal, Camp Hollywood, and Stardust. A social dancer at heart, she values connection, creativity, and play. As a teacher, Jen combines clear technical guidance with humor and support, creating classes where dancers of all levels are challenged and encouraged to grow.

Andrew Wilson

Andrew brings his enthusiasm and infectious energy to both the dance floor and the classroom. His classes prioritize comfort and conversationality, rooted in the belief that learning is ultimately student-driven. His role, as he sees it, is orchestrating the conditions under which learning can most effectively occur: creating space for productive struggle, fostering a culture of inquiry over passive absorption, and leaving ample time to dance it out and find your own way of doing it.
